“Sports car” fans were furious when Ford added two rear seats to the Thunderbird in 1958, but Ford had no such sentiments. Ford exec and “Whiz Kid” Lewis Crusoe had seen the original T-bird as a  halo car, but the OG T-bird was a money loser and Crusoe quietly had stylist Bill Boyer start work on a 4-seat replacement as early as March of 1955. The resulting ‘58 was a smash hit - a fifties dreamboat that defined a new class - personal luxury cars. The ‘58 “square bird” gave way to Boyer’s jet-age “bullet bird” in 1961. While the “bullet” started strong, its sales never measured up to the ‘58, and when it came time to replace it, Boyer & Co. took the older themes and created something that was still contemporary for 1964 - the “Flair Bird.” A unibody car, much of the structure was retained from the “bullet,” but you wouldn’t have known by looking - inside or out. John Najjar gave the car a new and flashy interior - with chrome on almost every surface, hence the nickname. By 1964 GM had a proper T-bird rival, Buick’s Riviera, but the T-bird was still king of the “personal cars,” despite being heavier than a Country Squire; which didn’t make the T-bird the greatest performer or handler. The weight came from the robust structure and all the gizmos Ford added to it (power everything and the wiring to match ) - including sequential tail lights, introduced in ‘65. To motivate that much car all T-birds had 390 cubes or more, and to haul it down to a stop, front discs became standard in ‘65. The “Flair” was, however, a pure boulevard cruiser, and in ‘66 it got a new roofline that presaged “formal” pimpmobiles to come, the “Town” hardtop. Unibody cars are hard to change, so altering the roof was an easy way to keep things fresh - the “Town” hardtop had blind quarters from it’s massive combined B/C pillar for a limousine look. “Town Landau” versions got padded vinyl and landau bars for an even frillier appearance. The “Town” hardtops, a one-year-only deal on the “Flair bird,” sold more than all the other models combined, and pointed the way forward for the next T-birds, which arrived in the fall of 1967 with dramatically new styling and a new four-door variation.
