Guilt. The overwhelming feeling that we have done something wrong. The purpose of the feeling is to try and force us to make a change, apologize, do something-ANYTHING-to get the feeling to go away. The problem with guilt, though, is that it can attack us at time that we are objectively not at fault. I tend to give the following example: if 4 people asked you to marry them, you would have to say “no” to 3 of them. You might feel guilty about that, but you objectively are not doing anything wrong! You can’t marry 4 people at the same time. Guilt comes up frequently in individuals struggling with OCD and other anxiety related disorders. Their bodies are so concerned with protecting them from wrongdoing or judgement, that the message of guilt is sent way too frequently and incredibly powerfully. ‘ ’What if I send this email and the person thinks I am wasting their time?’’ “What if I look at someone who isn’t my partner and am attracted to them?” “I was asked to work on Saturday and I said ‘no’ and I must have done something terrible because I feel so guilty” I think we can agree that the guilt is ‘underserved’ in these situations. I love the concept of identifying guilt as ‘undeserved’ because it helps us acknowledge that the feeling is there, but that it might not be an accurate representation of what is happening. Susan Forward uses some questions to challenge guilt-she suggests asking things like “Am I being malicious?” or “Am I purposefully hurting someone with my actions?” to challenge guilt and label it as ‘undeserved’. The guilt won’t go away immediately-that’s not the point! Labeling it as undeserved may help you sit with it, rather than giving in and trying to fix it. Try it out and see!

Often we can't change our situation or environment. We can't switch on or off our feelings about it either (if I asked you to feel the happiest you've ever felt right now just because I'm asking you to, could you do it? ). . What we can change is the way we think about our situation, ourselves, others, or the world. This can have a huge impact on the way we feel about something, the actions we choose to take, and the outcomes we get. . This is the (very basic ) premise of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT ), considered the "gold standard" of treatment for lots of common mood disorders like depression and anxiety. We must let go of what we can’t control! The UGLY truth: we have very little control over many of the things/events that may happen. However we can control our effort/ way we show up for ourselves and the way we respond to our thoughts. Fear is powerful. Fear makes it hard to let go. We are scared of what may happen especially if we depend on this person/thing for our happiness. In turn, we hold on as tight as we can. Not realizing that letting go and tolerating uncertainty is often much more freeing. - it’s taken me all day to find the courage to post this. I’m not the skinniest nor the prettiest I don’t claim to be. As most of yous know I have body dismorphia and for a good few weeks now I have been getting CBT which will continue for months to come to help me live with it and control my thoughts and feelings about how I look etc better than I have been. Today was a good day, today I felt good about myself and how I looked tomorrow might be a different story each day is different. Take the good with the bad and keep moving forward. TOO MANY THINGS ON THE TO-DO LIST = AN UNMANAGEABLE ONE = A STRESSFUL ONE. . 🎨 @thetypewriterdaily 🙏 ✒ @anxiety_wellbeing . . 😔That's when productivity has become nothing but more stress, more anxiety, so no wonder we wanna lay flat on the floor, head burried in the shagpile carpet, not wanting to move for love nor money. . ➡️↘️⬇️↙️⬅️↖️Trying to be productive can end up being more stress anything. Where we all go wrong, myself included, is we try to cram as many things as possible on the list, but there is no way we have all the energy to do all these things with the energy we have. We end up trying to put our energy into lots & lots of things & they don't get done successfully because the energy had been given to all, thinly. Yhen it's overwhelming & nothing you wanted to do, happens because the mind is now telling you. 🗣Enough we need a rest! . ➡️➡️➡️To be productive you have to put your energy into a few things, & give only those your energy. Make the list manageable, learning what you are able to acheive in the time, takes a bit of practice & that's fine, what's not ok is beating yourself up because if it, you're not a 🤖 you're human & learning. BUT ALSO . 🙏In that list there needs to be things that rejuvenate that energy too. Breaks to . Breathe Drink water Have a mindful moment A healthy snack Something fun Gratefulness Get outside. Do absolutely nothing Yes NOTHING! . 😎So that you don't end up, overwhelmed, & laying on the floor come Saturday, not at all enjoying your down time, more like having time where you just feel down. . 🙏This week & weekend take it slow, recoup as much as you can, you're not supposed to be being productive or doing all the time. . 📖Redo your list, if it's in your head, you'll have a hard time remembering everything & that will cause you stress too. Write these things down, out of your head & onto paper. Write the list honestly & manageable WITH YOU time too. . Also increases wellbeing, fresh air, movement, change of scenery. . 🗣Opening up, counteracts stress that it's just you, you're in your own, let's the words out that are going around your head, helps you to hear it clearly so that you feel better, release & now is easier to manage. . 🤗Being honest, counteracts the blocking of emotions, blocked emotions don't go anywhere they stay in the body and can cause illness, stress, overwhelm. When we are honest with ourselves we can start to heal. 📝get writing. It will be ok, let the words and the emotions come & pass. . 🚫Switch your phone off, counteracts the time spent on???? The ideas and beleifs that are being fed to us that are unhealthy and cause negative thought. Also frees up time to Invest in yourself. . 🍵Sip a warm herbal drink. Counteracts stress, slows you down, the herbs can have a calming effect too. Take tike ti Hydrate you. You van also try some deep breathes, relax your body. . 🥑Eat a balanced meal, no processed food, keeps your sugar levels at a nice level. Rather that a sugary breakfast, feelimg tired at 11. Snacking. A sugar rush. Feeling tired 2 hours later. An on and on. Exhausting. Worries about why You feel like that? Fearing the worst. . ☠If you think you cannot attempt any if these things or that they won't work. . 🌱Have you tried? . If you don't try you will never know, See, feel the difference. . What's stopping you? Are you telling your self no, it's impossible, no time. . You are the driver of your train, if you decide to do other things, you'll have no time. You decide. You plan. What do you see around you? What do you hear? What do you smell? And so on... 〰️ ➡️mindfulness is so important as it means acknowledging that your anxious thoughts are JUST THOUGHTS...thoughts are not reality...thoughts are not dangerous...acknowledge your thoughts and feeling and remind yourself that you are safe, you’re NOT dying, and the feeling is temporary. 〰️ ➡️find a focus object! Similar to the 5 senses technique...focus on one thing in the room and describe what you see. Describe the object...what does it look like? How does it feel? Does it ever feel like the problems in your head are so much worse than they really are? 〰️ In the cognitive behavioral therapy world, we call this catastrophizing... 〰️ Blowing things out of proportion can be a problem if you are the one in charge. This means making a situation far worse than it really is... 〰️ But the truth is, most of the times the thought is our head is actually the problem... 〰️ One of the best phrases I’ve ever read was “The problem is almost never the problem.” 〰️ Think about that. Whenever you are confronted with what seems like the worst thing in the world, try and alter your thinking pattern. Think of the situation as it is RIGHT NOW. 〰️ Try saying “This is upsetting and may be a problem, but I can and will make it through this.” 〰️ Believe me, I know that is easier said than done...but it just takes practice and perspective. And also a healthy and safe support system! 〰️ Also remember, if you ever feel like your anxiety is interfering with your functioning on a daily basis, please reach out to a licensed counselor for support. ❤️ 〰️ Anyone else’s brain automatically go to the worst case scenario when a problem arises?
