Morpheus @CityOfDreamsMacau celebrates its first anniversary this week. . Morpheus was designed as a vertical extrusion of the site’s existing abandoned foundations for a condominium tower that did not progress; using this rectangular footprint to define a 40-storey building of two internal vertical circulation cores at podium and roof levels where the many guest amenities were required. . Three horizontal vortices generate the voids through the central atrium and define the hotel’s spectacular interior public spaces. In-between these voids, a series of bridges create unique spaces for the restaurants, bars and guest lounges by renowned chefs including @AlainDucasse & @PierreHermeOfficial Working with @BuroHappoldEngineering #ZahaHadid Architects designed the building’s structure to optimise the hotel’s interiors. The world’s first free-form high-rise exoskeleton, its rich pattern of structural members at lower levels progresses upwards to a less dense grid of lighter members at its summit. . Lawrence Ho, chairman and CEO of Melco Resorts said, “From the very beginning, we shared ZHA’s vision and determination to push boundaries. Morpheus offers a journey of the imagination. From the curved exterior to the dramatic interior spaces, it pleases the eye and excites the senses: a contemporary masterpiece to be enjoyed by many generations to come.” . @TIME Magazine listed Morpheus Hotel as one of the World’s Greatest Places based on key factors including quality, originality, innovation, sustainability and influence. #SundayStaircase Contemporary Arts Center (CAC ) in Cincinnati – great image by @JohnLinden_Photo Opened in 2003, @CincyCAC is a forum for the exchange of ideas; presenting art that feeds the cultural vitality of the city. Not defined by a collection or set approach to art, CAC is a changeable platform open and receptive to the creative diversity of artists from around the globe. With a system of ramped staircases navigating visitors through a series of galleries stacked vertically above the lobby, visitors can see each other moving through the spaces and interacting with the art. In this way, the architecture facilitates the viewing of art as a collective experience. Rather than presuming that flexibility depends on blandness, the CAC offers a wide diversity gallery spaces, each with a particular character, creating an engaging experience where the architecture is a catalyst for instigating the process of making, as well as viewing, art. . #Cincinnati #Ohio #USA #architecture #zahahadid #zahahadidarchitects

#HappyBirthdayHighline Congratulations to @HighLineNYC This week #NewYork ’s High Line celebrates 10 years since opening to the public, and 20 years since the Friends of the High Line began advocating for the abandoned freight rail line to be transformed into a public park at a time when the historic structure was under the threat of demolition. . Today the park welcomes over 7 million visitors a year with Friends of the High Line organizing more than 450 public programs and activities for local communities. . There is a powerful urban dynamic along the High Line - a layered civic realm that has developed over generations and in many iterations. @520w28 by #ZahaHadid Architects conveys this contextual relationship, applying new ideas and concepts to create the latest evolution of the site’s rich history. Its steel façade carries the spirit of Chelsea’s industrial past—brushed and tinted by hand to resonate with the adjacent structures of the #HighLine and its #NYC neighbourhood. This detailed workmanship by @MCohenAndSons continues the venerable tradition within New York’s historic #architecture of enhancing the public realm . Great photo #reposted from @hirokophotography

Designed in response the environment of the Riyadh Plateau to minimise energy consumption, KAPSARC opened in 2017 and received LEED Platinum certification by the US Green Building Council. . KAPSARC is a non-profit institution for research into the most effective use of energy for social wellbeing. Developing policies to reduce the environmental impact & costs of energy supply and enabling practical solutions to use energy more efficiently, KAPSARC brings together experts from around the world to tackle energy challenges; freely sharing its analytical knowledge. . In nature, hexagonal prismatic honeycomb structures use the least amount of material to create a lattice of cells within any given volume. This natural principle determined KAPSARC’s composition as an amalgamation of crystalline forms that emerges from the desert landscape, evolving to best respond to the environment. . Presenting a solid, protecting shell to the harsh sunlight from the south, the campus opens to north and west; encouraging prevailing winds to cool the campus during temperate months via a series of sheltered courtyards that bring softly-controlled daylight into the interior. . Orientated for the sun & wind conditions, the crystalline forms of KAPSARC’s prismatic cells gain in height towards the south, west, and east to shield internal spaces from direct sunlight. ‘Wind-catchers’ integrated within the roof profiles direct prevailing winds from the north into each courtyard for cooling. . KAPSARC was named KSA’s ‘smartest’ building in the Honeywell Smart Building Awards programme, based on criteria that include environmental sustainability, safety & productivity. . #WorldEnvironmentDay

The core and shell development of Leeza SOHO, #Beijing has been awarded LEED Gold certification. Established by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design ) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. A globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement, LEED provides a framework to create healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings. . Scheduled to open this autumn, Leeza SOHO is ZHA’s fourth collaboration with SOHO China to achieve LEED certification, totalling 15 million square feet (1.4 million m² ) of mixed-use urban space in Beijing and Shanghai. Straddling the new subway tunnel that diagonally divides its site, the Leeza SOHO tower rises as a single volume divided into two halves on either side of the tunnel. A central atrium - the world’s tallest - extends 194m through the full height of the building and connects with the metro station below, creating a fantastic new public space for the city. As the tower rises, the diagonal axis through the site defined by the subway tunnel is re-aligned by ‘twisting’ the atrium through 45 degrees to orientate the atrium’s higher floors with the historic north-south / east-west axis on which the city was founded. The tower’s double-insulated, unitised glass curtain-wall system steps the glazing units on each floor at an angle, allowing ventilating registers to draw outside air through an operable cavity when required; creating extremely efficient environmental control for each floor. @ZhangXinSoho , Soho China’s CEO, explained at Leeza SOHO’s ground-breaking, “China attracts the best talent from around the world. It’s important to work with architects who understand what the next generation requires; connecting communities and traditions with innovative new technologies to embrace the future.” . This week’s #SundayStaircase : Port House #Antwerp Stunning photo #reposted from @bartgosselinphotography Port House repurposes, renovates and extends a derelict fire station into a new headquarters building for the @PortOfAntwerp , reconnecting the city with the vital activities of its shipping port. With 12km of docks handling 26% of Europe’s container shipping, Antwerp is the continent’s second largest port, with ambitious targets for future expansion to meet Europe’s growth over the next century. Working with heritage consultants @origin_eu , ZHA’s historic analysis of the fire station revealed its unrealised tower. Port House is a composition of a new volume that ‘floats’ above the old building, respecting each of the existing facades and completing the verticality of the original design’s unbuilt central tower. The new extension points towards the city, connecting Antwerp with the port on which it was founded. Surrounded by water, the new extension's façade reflects the changing tones and colours of the city’s sky. This perception of a transparent volume, cut to give the new building its sparkling appearance, reinterprets Antwerp’s moniker as the city of diamonds. With constant references to the River Scheldt, the city of #Antwerp and the dynamics of its port, married with the successful renovation and reuse of a redundant fire station–wholly integrating the old firehouse as part of the new headquarters–Port House will serve the port of Antwerp well through its planned expansion over future generations. . #havenhuis #belgium #architecture #zahahadid #zahahadidarchitects
Beijing Daxing International Airport nearing completion to begin services this September. Video via @CGTN ・ . With the city’s existing airport at capacity, Beijing’s new airport will serve the world’s fastest growing aviation sector. Accommodating 72 million passengers per year by 2025 (630,000 flights/year on 4 runways ), the airport is designed for further expansion to accommodate 100 million passengers and 4 million tonnes of cargo annually. The new terminal with rail transportation centre is designed to be extremely user-focussed, efficient and adaptable for future growth; its 6-pier radial design gives exceptional convenience for passengers and flexibility in operations. Evolving from principles within traditional Chinese architecture that organise interconnected spaces around a central courtyard, the new terminal’s design guides all passengers seamlessly through the relevant departure, arrival or transfer zones towards the grand courtyard at its centre – a multi-layered meeting space at the very heart of the terminal. The terminal’s compact, radial design minimises distances between check-in and gate, as well as minimising distances between gates for transferring passengers. Every aircraft pier radiates from the terminal’s main central court where all passenger services & amenities are located. Flowing parabolic folds within the terminal’s vaulted roof reach to the ground to support the structure and allow natural light within, directing all passengers to the central courtyard. The new airport includes an integrated transport centre offering direct links to Beijing city centre, local rail services and the national high-speed rail network. ・ . #Beijing #China #architecture #airport #zahahadid #zahahadidarchitects
#TBT The new Al Janoub Stadium hosted a fantastic Amir Cup final last week with Al Duhail beating Al Sadd football club by 4-1. Located in the city of Al Wakrah 23km south of Doha and connected to the capital via the Red Line of new Doha Metro, Al Janoub is the first new stadium completed for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. . The new 40,000-seat football stadium can be reduced to a 20,000-seat facility in its legacy mode - the optimum capacity as home ground to Al Wakrah Sport Club professional football team. The stadium has an operable fabric roof and cooling technologies powered by solar harvesting. When deployed, the roof operates like a sail to shade the field of play. Passive design principles along with computer modelling and wind tunnel tests were used to maximise the effectiveness of the enclosure for player and spectator comfort. The #ZahaHadid Architects’ stadium design reflects Al Wakrah’s maritime heritage, in particular, the dhow – a traditional boat of the region; incorporating these cultural references in an abstracted manner and combines them with practical responses to the climate, context & functional requirements. The abstraction transforms the literal into something new and appropriate for a stadium; allowing multiple interpretations - both in terms of how they are applied and how they are read. The stadium’s roof design is an abstraction of the hulls of dhows turned upside-down and huddled together to provide shade and shelter. This concept is expressed in the stadium’s envelope geometry, details and selected materiality. The opaque roof and wall areas have pleated cross sections. With origins in Arabic motifs and calligraphy, these fluid lines and pleats add texture to the outer shell and emphasise the stadium’s unique geometry. Designed in conjunction with its new precinct to sit at the heart of an urban extension of the city, creating community-based activities in and around the stadium on non-event days, Al Janoub stadium will be a memorable venue of the 2022 World Cup and afterwards at the centre of its Al Wakrah community.

Great photo of the theatre lobby at Nanjing International Youth Cultural Centre - #repost from @laurence_chellali The cultural centre was shortlisted for the @AIA UK ‘Excellence in Design’ Awards 2019 that recognise work of the highest standards by architects, industrial designers, urban planners, landscape architects and interior designers based in Britain. . Harnessing the energy of the 2014 Youth Olympic Games to create project with a lasting legacy that has enhanced and also regenerated its setting, the centre acts as both an anchor and a catalyst for future investment in Nanjing’s Hexi New Town. The centre’s design is a three dimensional calligraphic composition that resonates with #Nanjing ’s 1,600-year-old tradition of Yunjin - the name given to the intricate brocade threading used by local craftsmen to weave the region’s acclaimed gold and silver fabrics. Like Yunjin thread, a continuous line interweaves throughout the cultural centre connecting it with its earthquake-resistant towers and beyond to the new central business district, riverside park and Jiangxinzhou Island. Comprised of two hotel towers that include the new @JumeirahGroup Nanjing, a cultural centre with conference facilities, an urban plaza, offices and mixed-use areas, the development initially provided accommodation for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. Now in its legacy stage, the centre has fostered investment in Hexi New Town on multiple levels; integrating additional infrastructure with new functions that include the hotels and a venue for Jiangsu Province’s annual conferences. . #Nanjing #China #architecture #zahahadid #zahahadidarchitects

Generali Tower in #Milan and @520W28 in #NewYork named winners of @ThePlanMag Awards 2019. . Generali Tower is within @CityLifeMilano , the largest new civic space and public park in Milan since Parco Sempione opened 130 years ago. Aligned at ground level with three of the city’s primary axes that converge within CityLife, the 170m Generali Tower connects with its surrounding public piazzas and park; the curvilinear geometries of its podium defined by the perceived centripetal forces generated from the staggered intersection of these three city axes. This vortex of centripetal forces at ground level is transferred vertically through the tower by realigning successive rhomboid-shaped floor plates to twist the tower about its vertical axis. This helical twist reduces incrementally with the height of each floor above street level, giving all floors a fractionally different relationship to the floors above and below. As the tower rises offering broader views across Milan, the twist orientates the tower's higher floors to the primary southeast axis leading to Bramante’s 15th Century tribune of Santa Maria della Grazie. The tower houses up to 3,900 employees to meet Generali’s continued growth as one of the world’s largest financial institutions. With a double façade system, Generali Tower’s high standards of energy efficiency have received LEED Platinum certification from the US Green Building Council. . #SundayStaircase : Fantastic view of the central stair within the Jockey Club Innovation Tower (JCIT ) at @HongKongPolyU - #repost from @ariss_ JCIT is home to the university's School of Design and Institute for Social Innovation. The 15 storey, 15,000 sq. m. tower accommodates more than 1,800 students and staff, with design studios, labs and workshops, exhibition areas, multi-functional classrooms, lecture theatre and community lounges. The tower’s interiors create informal spaces to meet and interact, complementing the large exhibition forums, studios, theatre and recreational facilities. Its design promotes a multidisciplinary environment by connecting the variety of programs within the School of Design, encouraging interaction between the many different learning clusters and design disciplines; establishing a collective research culture where many contributions and innovations can learn from each other. . #HongKong #architecture #zahahadid #zahahadidarchitects
